Stephen Fernandez was a taekwondo jin who won a bronze medal in the 1992 Summer Olympic Games when taekwondo was still a demonstration sport. Prior to this, he won gold in the 1987 Southeast Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia; bronze in the 1988 Asian Taekwondo Championships in Kathmandu, Nepal; and bronzes in the 1989 Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and in 1991 in Manila, Philippines.

In 1992 at the Barcelona Games, he lost to Sayed Najem of Canada. 1-0. Najem at that time was already number 2 in the world who has won a silver in the World Taekwondo Championships in 1991 in Athens, Greece.

Fernandez became a coach in his retirement, mentoring the taekwondo jins in his alma mater, the De La Salle University, and members of the Philippine team. He also became a sports leader and served as Deputy Secretary General of the Philippine Taekwondo Association and the Deputy Chef de Mission for the Philippine delegation to the 2019 Southeast Asian Games in the Philippines.
