Roberto Cruz is one of the most bemedaled Filipino taekwondo jin . He competed in the 1990s and was at the tail-end of a long illustrious career when he qualified for the 2000 Sydney Olympics where taekwondo first became a medal sport. He competed in the flyweight event of the Sydney Games. He defeated Gabriel Sagástume of Guatemala in the first round but lost to Gabriel Taraburelli in the quarterfinals.

He is a 6-time gold medalist in the Southeast Asian Games; a gold medalist in the Asian Olympic Qualifying Tournament; a 3-time silver medalist in the World Taekwondo Championships; a 2-time silver medalist in the Asian Taekwondo Championships; a 2-time bronze medalist in the World Cup Taekwondo Championships; and 2- time bronze medalist in the World Taekwondo Championships.
