Bukidnon native Carlo Paalam debuted at the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics with an impressive run that earned a silver medal. Despite being a clear underdog, the young flyweight boxer defeated veterans and two-time Olympians Brendan Irvine of Ireland and Mohamed Flissi of Algeria in the first two rounds, respectively. More incredibly, Paalam was able to defeat 2016 Olympic gold medalist Shakhobidin Zoirov of Uzbekistan.Beforehand, he was named 2019 Southeast Asian Games champion, and 2018 Asian Games 2nd runner up.

Paalam started his boxing career after being scouted in a “Boxing at the Park” tournament held in Cagayan de Oro. He was recruited by the national team at 15 years old.
