Carlo Paalam grew up in Cagayan de Oro, weekly he would join boxing matches at his local park to earn some money to provide for his family. Though he was carrying a shoulder injury that wrecked his hopes of obtaining a Paris Olympics place, in March in 1st World Qualification Tournament he managed to win his opener by a unanimous decision. At the 2024 Paris Olympics he came out unanimous in the men’s boxing that secured a split against Ireland’s Jude Gallagher won in what at the attritional 57kg encounter.
He debuted at the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics with an impressive run that earned a silver medal. Despite being a clear underdog, the young flyweight boxer defeated veterans and two-time Olympians Brendan Irvine of Ireland and Mohamed Flissi of Algeria in the first two rounds, respectively. More incredibly, Paalam was able to defeat 2016 Olympic gold medalist Shakhobidin Zoirov of Uzbekistan. Beforehand, he was named 2019 Southeast Asian Games champion, and 2018 Asian Games 2nd runner up.
