Cris Nievarez participated at the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics and ranked 23rd at the lightweight single sculls event. He is only the 3rd Filipino rower to compete in the Olympics, having the 2nd rower 20 years before in 2000 - Nievarez’s birth year. He clinched the gold medal at the 2019 Southeast Asian games with 7 minutes and 34,27 seconds.
Nievarez grew up in Quezon province, where he started rowing in 2015. He was invited to play for the national team in the same year, making his Olympic debut only 5 years after his rowing career started.
